Why Sunscreen is a Non-Negotiable

As we step into longer, sunnier days (especially us Montana folks who love to soak in every bit of our short summers!), May brings an important reminder: it’s Skin Cancer Awareness Month. At Whitefish Creative Aesthetics, we’re serious about protecting your skin—both for its health and beauty. One of the simplest, most effective tools we have? Daily sunscreen.

The Real Risk: Skin Cancer by the Numbers

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Daily sunscreen use has been shown to reduce the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma by up to 40% and melanoma by 50% (Green et al., J Clin Oncol, 2011).

Understanding UVA vs. UVB

  • UVA rays (think Aging) penetrate deep into the skin, accelerating premature aging and contributing to skin cancer. These rays are constant throughout the day and year—even on cloudy days and through glass.
  • UVB rays (think Burning) cause sunburn and directly damage the DNA in skin cells, leading to mutations that can result in cancer. These rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

A good sunscreen should protect against both. Look for the phrase “broad-spectrum” on your label.

Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreen: What’s the Difference?

  • Chemical Sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. Common ingredients include avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octinoxate. These formulas tend to be sheer and cosmetically elegant—but may cause irritation for sensitive skin.
  • Mineral (Physical) Sunscreens use ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to form a protective barrier that reflects UV rays. These are often better tolerated by sensitive or acne-prone skin and start working immediately upon application.

Ingredients to Avoid in Sunscreens

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Some ingredients are associated with hormone disruption or environmental harm. Consider avoiding:

  • Oxybenzone: linked to coral reef damage and potential endocrine disruption
  • Octinoxate: also harmful to marine life and may cause allergic reactions
  • Retinyl Palmitate: a form of vitamin A that may increase skin sensitivity to sunlight
  • Fragrance: can be irritating or cause allergic reactions, especially in sensitive skin
